Government urged to enforce illegal chainsaw law.
He said, although, illegal chainsaw activities which had
been prohibited by the Timber Resource Management Regulations has been a livelihood
support for many Ghanaians but has adversely affected the Country.
He was speaking at the presentation of some items to the
Forestry Research Institute of Ghana at Fumesua where he attributed the cause
of the intense hot weather currently in the country to illegal chainsaw
operation and urged practitioners to use the right channel in their activities
in order to preserve our forest.
The items which worth GHC 100,000.00 include a Toyota
Pick-up, two chainsaw and computers were handed to the Forestry Research
institute at Fumesua for participating in the Chainsaw Milling project which
was funded by the European Union E/U to help curb elegal chainsaw menace.
On his part, Dr. Daniel Ofori, Director for Forestry
Research Institute of Ghana FORIG, who received the items on behalf of his team,
commended the Tropenbos International and called on all and sundry to support
in the effort to maintain our Forest.
He bemoaned the informal activities which which has been
degrading our environment.
“Activities such as illegal chainsaw operation, small
scale mining and deforestation have been defacing our environment. Our Water
bodies are being destroyed by such informal activities which need to be
addressed to save our environment” He said.
