Widows intercessor wants a free legal office to fight for widows rights

The president for Ekunafo Mmoa foundation, Mrs. Philomina Antwiwaa has called on the government to set up a legal office of qualified lawyers that will bestow justice for widows who suffer maltreatment from their late husband's relatives.

According to her, it is a worry most widows become stranded and helpless, as their late husband's relatives deny them access to their late husband's properties, hence, the need to provide them with free legal experts who will fight for their rights.

The widows advocate made this request during the 2017 annual prayer conference of the Ekunafo Mmoa foundation in Kumasi. It was held under the theme: The power of a praying widow/ caring for the widow.

Mrs. Philomina stressed that most widows in case of any litigation with their late husband's relatives appear to lose the battle to the family, as they are unable to settle the charges demanded by the lawyers, thereby loosing their properties.

"I have chosen to stand for the widows because they do not have any helper. It is very disturbing when the families of the late husbands rise against them to claim their properties. They then become helpless and lose the properties to them because they lack the money to pay their lawyers to intercede for them, the government should intervene", She noted.

She appealed to the government to intensify its support for the widows and not renege on the promises it has made to them.

"I am appealing to the government to improve upon the support it has been offering widows. We are earnestly waiting for the LEAP program to be implemented next year, we thank the government for supporting the Ekunafo Mmoa foundation all this while".

Meanwhile, a representative from the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection, Ester Seidu said the government has in stalk some good policies to be released for the widows through the LEAP program to provide them with better livelihood.

Se added that the government has planned to introduce the younger widows into entrepreneurship through a scheme it is yet to establish.

Meanwhile, some of the widows in an interview appealed to the government to set up a permanent scheme that will provide them with financial assistance, to enhance their living conditions.

According to them, life has become extremely tough for them because they do not receive any help from any body.

One of them said, "my husband died long a go whiles our children were still young. I have been the only person taking care of them and it has not been easy at all, we really need the help of the government".

The event brought to the grounds over seven thousand widows from across the Ashanti Region.
