Komenda health facility in a deplorable state, management calls for renovation
The lone health facility at Komenda - Edina- Abirem Eguafo Municipality in the Central Region is in a deplorable state, posing security threat on the health personnel and patients.
The health director at the hospital, Dr. John Ekow Otoo in an interview said the facility has seen no renovation since it was constructed in 1974, as it has developed cracks and leakages on the roof, threatening the lives of the people who patronize the facility.
He disclosed to Jerry Asare, a reporter with Atinka FM that the pillars and the ceiling of the facility is wearing out, posing as a death trap to its users.
"The facility is like a death trap because every wall here has developed cracks and water leaks through the ceiling which has developed some leakages".
According to him, the facility has been earmarked for a hospital due to its location, hence the need for immediate renovation to facilitate good health delivery.
He said considering the population of the sub districts of 500 coupled with the tourism activities at Elmina, there is an urgent need for a hospital in the area of which the facility could be used for the purpose.
Meanwhile, Dr. John Ekow Otoo revealed that the facility lacks ambulances, as the only five there have been packed due to some faults they have encountered.
He indicated that they are financially handicapped and cannot maintain them, hence the need for the government to come in and provide them with new ambulances to release stress on them.
"We have five ambulances but they have been packed. They were donations from Netherlands. They were used ones and not brand new so we used them for a while and they have spoiled".
He added that he has petitioned the ministry of health seeking to auction the ambulances as they cannot run them because they are high utility vehicles.
He has called on the government to pay attention to the facility and provide them with the requisite equipments to enhance their activities.
