Gunshots as Somanya residents clash with Police
About 8 people have reportedly been
injured in a fracas between Police in Somanya and residents following the
arrest of the alleged leader of last Friday’s chaos over ECG bills.
The demonstration last Friday was to protest 'outrageously' high utility bills charged residents by the Electricity Company of Ghana.
The residents were billing GHC 5, 000.00
up to GHC 10, 000.00.
The alleged ringleader of the Friday
chaos, Dindiindin Adamitey, an assemblyman, was picked up by the Police this morning
and is currently in custody assisting with investigations.
One of the residents, Eric Asamoah
who spoke to Angel News said the youth were demanding the immediate release of
the assemblyman hence vandalizing the police station and a Mahindra pick up
belonging to the police was burnt.
He said police and the military have
taken over the town but no one has been arrested.
