As part of measures to install sanity and ease congestion and traffic jams in the Kumasi Metropolis, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, (KMA), has issued restrictions to tricycle operations within the Central business District effective July 24th, 2023.
According to the head of transport department at KMA, Mr. Randy Wilson, Kumasi has been one of the thriving economic centers in Ghana that draws a lot of visitors and investors for business, with the central business district being the main point for business operations.
Addressing a section of the media in Kumasi, Mr. Randy said the CBD neighborhoods including Adum, Kejetia, Central Market, and Roman Hill are severely congested due to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, hence, their decision to restrict tricycle operations at these areas.
"Tricycle riders, often known as “pragiya,” and other business vehicles have been worsning the traffic situation as the riders load and unload recklessly and in violation of traffic laws." He said.
He added that the Assembly, in order to maintain orderliness at the CBD has restricted these tricycle operators from operating around Adum, Kejetia, Central Market and Roman Hill respectively, a move he said will help solve the traffic situation.
This measure according to the Assembly forms part of their comprehensive plans to reorganize the transport system within its jurisdiction.
