96 drivers arrested in Kumasi for defaulting road regulations

Some 95 drivers who ply the Suame route in the Kumasi Metropolis have been arrested by the Suame MTTD unit of the Ghana police service for various road offenses.

Some of them were arrested for failing to wear their seat belts whiles others were arrested for defying road traffic regulations and unlawful parking.

The arrested road offenders consisting of commercial and private drivers and tricycle (aboboyaa) riders were detained at the forecourt of the Suame MTTD unit for several hours, where they were taken through some road safety sensitization by the MTTD officers.

ASP K.K Kawodie, the Suame MTTD commander who spearheaded the exercise in an interview with press men said the exercise was to ensure accident free this festive season.

"We took to the streets this morning to embark on an emergency road checks and these drivers were found culpable of violating road regulations. We did not arrest them to prosecute them but we are only educating them as a first caution, we will arrest and prosecute any of them who falls guilty after this education", ASP Kawodie noted.

He therefore advised road users (drivers, passengers and pedestrians) to be extra cautious when using the road during this period to reduce road accidents.

He urged passengers not to feel reluctant to question or report drivers who drive carelessly or break road regulations to his outfit to be charged.

" As we have entered into the Christmas festive season, we want to ensure that road accident is reduced drastically so drivers and passengers must all do their part to support this our ambition ".

The country has been experiencing numerous road accidents during every Christmas season from time immemorial.

Though road accidents unpredictably happens within the year, it gets worsened during the end of every year, as commercial drivers become more determined to make a lot of sales during that period.

It is of this reason why the country's MTTD Unit of the police service on getting to the climax of every year intensifies its campaign on road accidents to curb the menace.
