No road; no vote – Kumbunku residents in massive demo

Angry residents of Gbulung and it’s surrounding communities in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region, have threatened to boycott the 2016 polls if government fails to fix their road.

About a thousand of them including sub and youth chiefs, opinion leaders and assembly members, joined a massive demonstration on Wednesday August 17, 2016 to express their anger.

They held placards some of which read, “John Mahama stop sleeping, “NDC since 92 why,” “JM it is going against us why,” “We are tired, no road no vote,” “John Mahama, remember where you are coming from.”

The demonstrators say they will not rest until government addresses their concern.

The angry residents also indicated that they would not tolerate any political campaign activities in the area if they do not see any action on their roads within this period.

They bemoaned, Government workers like teachers, nurses among others refuse posting to the area and a few who accept postings also have challenges with movement within the area.

Spokesperson for the community, Seidu Safianu, addressing the media during the demonstration indicated that they are really disappointed in the NDC government over what he described as total neglect despite their support for the government into power.

He said the situation has been affecting their activities hence making life very difficult for them.

In a petition presented to the District Chief Executive of the Kumbungu, Hon. Alhaji Alhassan Musah, the residents claimed that "the three main roads, Gbullung-Kumbungu, Gubllung-Nyankpala and Gbullung-Tolon, which are about six miles each, are their main headache.

They lamented that, "the nature of the roads is causing social disharmony by disconnecting families and disrupting economic activities, making us poorer and poorer".

The disappointed residents have given President Mahama and his NDC government a one month ultimatum to rehabilitate the deplorable roads in the area or they bear their teeth against them.
